Symposium 2015 Information for Presenters

This post contains information regarding a number of topics for presenters whose papers or posters were accepted for presentation at the 2015 SMTE Symposium on Music Teacher Education, including: transportation, parking, poster session logistics, home base, and technology. Lead presenters will also receive this information by email, and please be sure to share this information with your co-presenters. For all questions about Symposium events and logistics, contact symposium@smte.us. Please also be sure to bookmark smte.us/2015 for all Symposium announcements and information.

TRANSPORTATION:

SMTE will not provide transportation to and from the airport. Taxi service is available by calling Triad Transportation at (336) 668-9808.

SMTE will provide free transportation between the UNCG campus and the Conference Host Hotel only (i.e., the Marriott Greensboro Downtown). This will occur Thursday evening before the opening reception, Friday morning and evening, and Saturday morning and evening. For more details about transportation and accommodations, visit the SMTE 2015 website or view this document.

PARKING:

There have been several questions about parking, especially from folks who are not staying at the Marriott and/or would be driving a car to campus.

The McIver Street parking deck is next door to the School of Music. For Thursday, all events are at the Music Building, so you will use the McIver Street parking deck. All Friday and most Saturday events will be at the Elliott University Center, so you will use the Walker Avenue parking deck. For both decks, the fee is $2 for the first hour, $1 for each additional hour, with a maximum of $7 per day, but the clock starts anew each time you re-enter the garage after exiting. The McIver Street parking deck has a self-serve pay station only, which means you will need to bring correct change ($5 and $1 bills) when parking there. The Walker Avenue deck has an attendant and a self-serve pay station.

A campus map is available here.

POSTER SESSION LOGISTICS:

New this year: the poster session rooms will be furnished with tackboard surfaces, so your poster need not be freestanding. Your poster may be a single document or an assembly of smaller documents, but the entire presentation should not exceed 45″ x 45″ in total. Plan to bring pushpins to affix your poster to the tackboards. Include the following information on your poster: title, authors and their affiliations, abstract, tables/graphs/pictures or other representations and illustrations of your data. The poster should be readable from 4′ away; use fonts 24 point or larger.

On the day of your poster session (Friday or Saturday), bring your poster with you in the morning to the EUC. We have designated the Ferguson Room for poster storage. You may drop off your poster in the Ferguson Room in the morning and pick it up at your set-up time.

HOME BASE:

We have designated the Willow Room as Home Base. It is the place to go to get logistical questions answered anytime during the symposium between 7:30 AM Friday morning and 5:30 PM Saturday evening.

TECHNOLOGY:

We will be unable to offer the capability to ‘Skype in’ additional presenters to primary presentation sessions. UNCG has undergone technology security changes on campus that make it problematic for using Skype reliably during any session except plenary sessions.

We will provide data projectors and audio systems for each presentation room. We strongly suggest that you bring your own laptop, preloaded with all files necessary for your presentation. Along with your laptop, please remember to bring any fanout/cable adapters to connect to standard VGA monitors/projectors (D15 VGA). A picture of what the open end of your cable should look like is provided here. Audio connectors for our rooms consist of a standard (small) headphone-type connector (1/8” miniplug, 1/8” TRS), present on most laptops. It might be a good idea to back up your data (e.g. PowerPoint Presentation files and any corresponding audio /visual files) on a thumb drive and bring it with you.

Finally, please know that UNCG is a wireless campus enabling guests to sign in to the UNCG-Visitor network using their built-in wireless client. For more info go to: https://its.uncg.edu/network_services/wireless/connect/guest/

If you have any questions about our facilities or any specific needs you might have outside of the aforementioned items, please contact symposium@smte.us as soon as possible listing “Tech Question” in the subject.

As always, please contact us at symposium@smte.us if you have questions about these topics or anything else related to the SMTE Symposium.
