The U.S. Department of Education today announced new proposed regulations for collecting and reporting data on teacher preparation programs under Title II of the Higher Education Act. Members of the public may comment on these proposed regulations through February 2, 2015. Among the many proposed changes, these rules aim to create a system “defining the indicators of quality that States will use to assess the performance of their teacher preparation programs, including more meaningful indicators of program inputs and program outcomes, such as the ability of the program’s graduates to produce gains in student learning.” The proposed system would include four categories of labeling teacher preparation programs based on these outcomes. Music teacher educators are encouraged to learn more about these proposed rules and how they might affect policy in your state and at your institution.
