2007 Symposium on Music Teacher Education:
COLLABORATIVE ACTION FOR CHANGE

September 13-15, 2007
University of North Carolina at Greensboro

SPONSORED BY:
Society for Music Teacher Education
School of Music at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG)
Music Research Institute at the UNCG School of Music
Music Educators National Conference

PURPOSE:
The purpose of this symposium is to sustain the professional conversation initiated at the 2005 Symposium on Music Teacher Education, to engage a broader constituency of practitioners and policy makers in this conversation, and to expand our understanding of educational change. In 2005, Symposium participants established 12 initial Areas for Strategic Planning and Action (ASPAs).

ASPAs:
1. Teacher Recruitment
2. Program Admission, Assessment, and Alignment
3. Music Teacher Socialization in the Preservice Years
4. Critical Examination of the Curriculum
5. Cultural Diversity and Social Justice
6. School/University Partnerships
7. Policy And Association Partnerships
8. Professional Development for the Beginning Teacher
9. Professional Development for the Experienced Teacher
10. Teacher Retention
11. Preparing Music Teacher Educators/Supporting Current Music Teacher Educators
12. Alternative Licensure

The Society for Music Teacher Education is particularly committed to effecting change through collaborative action. Since the 2005 Symposium, work in these ASPAs has been forwarded by groups of interested practitioners and researchers at the 2006 MENC Biennial Conference and via the SMTE website (http://smte.us). We invite proposals for the 2007 Symposium on Music Teacher Education that address these critical issues and further our goals.

Music teacher educators, deans/directors of schools of music, state and local fine arts supervisors, state policy officials associated with certification, licensure, and school improvement, K-12 educators, and graduate students in music education are particularly encouraged to participate in this symposium.

GENERAL SUBMISSION INFORMATION:
Proposals are especially enouraged that represent collaborations between music teacher educators and practictioners or policy makers. Examples of these types of collaborative presentations could include university faculty with curriculum specialists, K-12 teachers, school and university administrators. Other possibilities could include school of education faculty and music performance or theory/history faculty.

PRESENTATION FORMAT:
– Research Papers addressing an area of critical need (see ASPAs) or another relevant topic will be considered for presentation at one of the primary working sessions of the symposium. Papers may utilize quantitative or qualitative paradigms as well as philosophical or historical research methodologies. Please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words describing your study. If your paper is accepted, you will be asked to submit a completed full version of the paper to be included in the symposium proceedings.

– Best Practice Presentations will be considered for one of the primary working sessions of the symposium. Sessions should describe programs or practices that are effectively meeting one or more of the areas of critical need (see ASPAs) or addressing other relevant topics. Please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words describing the session that you plan to present. If your session is accepted, you will be asked to submit a completed version either as a PowerPoint file or as a paper to be included in the symposium proceedings.

– Position Papers will be considered for presentation at one of the primary working sessions of the symposium. Authors should present a unique viewpoint capable of generating thoughtful discussion about one or more of the areas of critical need (see ASPAs) or other relevant topics. Please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words. If your paper is accepted, you will be asked to submit a completed full version of the paper to be included in the symposium proceedings.

– Poster Session proposals of research, best practices, or position viewpoints exploring one or more of the areas of critical need (see ASPAs) or other relevant topics will be considered for presentation at the Symposium Poster Session. If your poster proposal is accepted, you will be asked to furnish 50 copies of a one- to two-page report summary at the poster session.

Please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words describing the study that you plan to present. Posters may utilize quantitative or qualitative paradigms as well as philosophical or historical research methodologies.
